Antique Danish Wrought Iron Mounted Fish Fork (18th Century)

A rare 18th-century wrought iron fish fork that feels as much like sculpture as it does a tool. Exceptionally decorative and a piece of pure folk art—whoever made it clearly went beyond function and put real effort into making something beautiful. When that happens, it’s special.

Mounted on a granite base, it’s ready to display and would look incredible in a fish restaurant, oyster bar, club, cocktail bar, or a home by the sea.

Measurements

  • Length: 38 cm
  • Width: 26 cm

History / collector’s note Traditionally, eel and fish forks were made by blacksmiths, and collectors often associate certain design details with specific areas of Denmark. There were also forks made by fishermen—sometimes as one-off pieces made for personal use. This example has the character and individuality of a unique, possibly single-made fork.

Condition Beautiful, honest age with strong patina and surface rust. The fork has been cleaned with wire wool and waxed to help prevent further corrosion, giving the iron a deep, attractive dark lustre.

Additional note (collector’s note) Eel forks are also part of a fishing culture that has changed significantly over time, and their use has been restricted in Denmark in the modern era.
